SHIP’S CAT THE PUBLIC ART OF KENJI YANOBE

Client: Joy City     Location: Shanghai     Year: 2016     Artist: Kenji Yanobe

‘Ship’s Cat’ refers to cats from the age of exploration. They traveled throughout the world protecting cargo and vessels from rats, warding off epidemics, and sometimes healing hearts of the crew members as a pet companion. Originally the cat’s role was supposed to dispose of vermin but this evolved to become a beloved figure, protector and guardian due to their ability to sense danger.

Artist Kenji Yanobe's SHIP'S CAT (Sailor) debuted in Joy City Mall, Changfeng, Shanghai. This permanent gigantic public art piece was located on the mall’s rooftop running track to empower women, connecting sport lovers with enthusiasm and courage.
